A safe and warm environment for children and adolescents with complex injuries and chronic illnesses

Ongoing medical care, rehabilitation, and mental health support — all under one roof. Whether a child is rehabilitating from a traumatic injury or is challenged by a chronic diagnosis or rare condition, they may require long-term rehabilitative care and ongoing medical services. Children with a lengthy hospitalization or history of hospitalization can benefit from a stable, home-like specialty hospital to continue making meaningful progress.

Offering a haven in a time of need, Nexus’s inpatient care setting is a secure, comfortable place to weather challenges. Patients and their families are in good hands as our multidisciplinary team navigates them through the ups and downs of recovery. From pulmonary services and ventilator weaning to treatment of severe infections and wound care. Nexus is capable of addressing a variety of complex needs. Not just a rehabilitation facility, our hospital supports patients with complicated diagnoses from all over the country. Within this program, children and adolescents gain the confidence to brave what lies ahead and find their course of healing with us, because we’re focused on mending minds.

Medical services, rehabilitation, and counseling — an uncommon combination vital to whole person care

Nexus Children’s Hospital’s multidisciplinary team offers holistic care, including pediatrics, neurology, physical medicine, psychiatry, rehabilitative therapists, dietitians, case managers, social workers, and more. While other hospitals may have a step-down ICU, Nexus offers aa range of services in one facility. In doing so, we’re able to adapt our approach as children progress through their recovery journey.

A therapeutic environment helping complex, technology dependent children

More than a rehabilitation facility, Nexus Children’s Hospital manages central lines, feeding tubes, g-tubes, and other lines, and cares for vent dependent children and those with vent weaning orders. Central monitoring to continuously evaluate our patients gives families peace of mind, while our patient advocate works to ensure all needs are met. In conjunction with medical and rehabilitation services, Nexus also offers behavioral and mental health support — which ensures the whole child is cared for and coping well.

If your child or patient has experienced a serious illness or a traumatic injury, finding a specialty hospital that offers both medical and behavioral care is crucial for successful recovery. Nexus Children’s Hospital is equipped to provide comprehensive inpatient care as patient needs evolve. From admission to discharge, our team guides you and your child through a personalized rehabilitation journey, including physical therapies, psychological evaluation and treatment, medication management for behavioral challenges, caregiver training and education, and a step-by-step plan for discharge.

Supporting families of children with serious illness

Caring for a child who has experienced a traumatic injury or serious illness can be overwhelming. Caregivers often struggle with worry, unwanted thoughts, and feelings of helplessness and anxiety. At Nexus Children’s Hospital, we provide caregivers the training and support they need to be successful when it is time to go home. Our counseling services also helps patients and their families manage their feelings and reactions.

Here are some essential tips we share with families:

  • Don’t neglect self-care. You can’t provide adequate care for your child without making sure your own physical and emotional needs are met.
  • Set realistic expectations for your child’s rehabilitation progress.
  • Communicate openly with your child. Encourage them to share and validate their emotions when they do.
  • Maintain strong connections with the rest of the family, including siblings and significant others.
