Nexus has returned individuals to lives of productivity and meaning for decades

We’re on the recovery and rehabilitation journey with you or your loved one

Nexus Health Systems was founded in 1992 to fill a void in the treatment of individuals with brain injury. As a Texas health system, Nexus has always helped individuals locally, and with more critical programs and services, is proud to serve people from across the U.S.

Since its founding, Nexus has expanded its programs and services to help children, adolescents, young adults, and adults with a variety of physical, mental, and behavioral challenges through unique programming. Always keeping the needs of the community — both near and far — in mind, Nexus is committed to mending minds.

A legacy of healing

Nexus Health Systems’ founder, Dr. John W. Cassidy, was recruited from Harvard as a leader of the neurobehavioral medical movement. He created a continuum of care beginning with Touchstone or “The Ranch” — now known as Nexus Neurorecovery Center – Conroe.

The continuum expanded in the early 2000s to include Nexus Specialty Hospital and Nexus Children’s Hospital – Houston. Along with new facilities, new programs were developed to help individuals who had other diagnoses besides brain injury: stroke, spinal cord injury, rare genetic conditions, co-existing medical and behavioral or mental health needs, and other complex traumas and illnesses. Just one example is the Jump Start Program for children with Prader-Willi Syndrome. Nexus offers this program — the only one of its kind in the country — at Nexus Children’s Hospital – The Woodlands.

More recently, Nexus opened Nexus Children’s Hospital – Dallas and Nexus Neurorecovery Center – San Antonio — bringing much needed care to new communities. To also help address the growing need in pediatric medical and psychiatric care, Nexus Specialty Hospital transitioned to Nexus Children’s Hospital – Shenandoah. The advent of new programs made it possible to create medical model residential treatment centers to further expand the scope of services. These new facilities and programs are making it possible to treat children, adolescents, and young adults that have challenging diagnoses.

Since the beginning, Nexus has been known for innovation, reframing what healthcare should provide patients and residents. Our model takes the entire person in view to understand specifically what the brain and body need to better predict challenges and create strategies for lasting outcomes. This neuropsychiatry foundation allows our team to identify underlying neurological impairments and devise purposeful recovery plans. Continuing this vision today, all of Nexus’ treatment plans are individualized and have the goal of community reintegration.

Across our continuum, Nexus Health Systems has created a safe place for individuals to rehabilitate and explore possibilities. Our overarching goal is to return patients to productive and meaningful lives — and we do so by mending minds.
