When Alfredo Zavala-Salgado was diagnosed with meningitis at age 14, his family was told he’d never walk, breathe on his own, or eat without a feeding tube. His prognosis felt overwhelming: a bed-bound existence and dependence on machines for basic functions.
But Alfredo and his family weren’t ready to give up hope. In a pivotal moment, a nurse recommended Nexus Children’s Hospital, and everything changed.
“At Nexus, Alfredo received the attention and care he needed from day one,” said his sister, Jennifer Zavala. “The therapy team was amazing. They were with him through every step, literally. Little by little, they helped him sit up, hold his iPad, and eventually take his first steps.”
Alfredo’s transformation at Nexus was nothing short of miraculous. When he first arrived, he couldn’t do more than wiggle his fingers or open his eyes. Today, he can walk, eat independently, and only requires ventilator support at night. The speech therapy team even helped him rediscover his voice.
“We thought Alfredo wouldn’t talk again,” Jennifer shared. “But through therapy and weaning off the vent, we learned he could communicate — first through his iPad and eventually by speaking aloud while eating. It was a big moment for all of us.”
Physical and occupational therapy were key parts of Alfredo’s recovery, helping him regain strength and independence. Nexus staff worked tirelessly to mobilize him as soon as possible, ensuring he could breathe on his own during the day and relearn everyday skills.
“They never gave up on him,” Jennifer said. “They saw his potential, even when others didn’t. Thanks to Nexus, Alfredo can do everything we were told he never would.”
Today, Alfredo is back home with his family, attending follow-up appointments and continuing to build on the skills he learned at Nexus. His journey inspires everyone around him—a testament to the power of determination and the right care.
“I see Nexus as a blessing,” said Jennifer. “They gave my brother his life back. We’re forever grateful.”
