Seven-year-old Caysen suffered a severe spinal cord injury and respiratory failure after a car accident. He spent multiple weeks at a local Houston hospital, undergoing different surgeries to help stabilize his injuries.
“His right leg and left arm were both casted,” said his mom, Alicia. “After he was stable, the doctors recommended Caysen go to Nexus because he would need long-term care and rehabilitation.”
In all, Caysen stayed at Nexus for 15 months, working towards his goals. He spent time in physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and also participated in many fun activities during his time at the hospital. Alicia recalls occupational therapy has helped him regain strength in his hand. He’s even ambidextrous now!
“Caysen was always prepared for our therapy sessions,” said Brenda Salas, Director of Rehabilitation. “Before he could even do much functionally, he responded very well to music! He later showed us how good of a dancer he really was. He surprised us daily with his perseverance and vivacious personality. Being a part of Caysen’s recovery and witnessing all of the obstacles he overcame to be where he is today is absolutely incredible. He is a champion at heart.”
“Nexus really did a lot for Caysen. The staff was generous and helpful,” explained Alicia. “He had a feeding tube and trach, which made it hard for him to communicate, but they helped him get used to the speaking valve and that made a big difference.”
Alicia also remembers Caysen started walking by the time he was discharged. Then, once at home, he got out of his wheelchair and has been walking on his own since.
