Nexus Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas is a child’s home away from home during recovery from complex medical issues following an acquired or traumatic brain injury, acute illness, chronic disease, or any other life-altering event. Our safe, nurturing pediatric environments provide individualized care in a family-focused setting. As the leaders in pediatric medical services and rehabilitation, Nexus Children’s Hospital treats children with primary medical issues who may also have secondary behavioral problems. Working with patients from infancy to age 21 who may have been unsuccessful in traditional rehabilitation environments, our flexible admissions criteria allows us to treat a wide variety of diagnoses.

Standards of Care*

  • Neurology, psychology, neuropsychology, neuropsychiatry, and physical and medical rehabilitation
  • Family-focused environment serving as a bridge between the hospital and home
  • Daily physician, physician's assistant, and nurse practitioner coverage
  • Comprehensive nutritional support team (speech-language pathologist, dietician department, certified nutritionists)
  • 24-hour nursing and respiratory coverage
  • Large, private rooms
  • Common patient social areas

Diagnoses Criteria*

  • Acquired Brain Injury (cardiac arrest, neoplasms/brain tumor, encephalitis, meningitis, drug overdose/poisoning, drowning/ asphyxia, prematurity, epilepsy)
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (falls, motor vehicle/ATV accidents, gunshot wounds/penetration wounds, non-accidental head trauma)
  • Medical Management of Behavioral Issues from a Comorbid Condition (such as Prader-Willi Syndrome [PWS], Autism, and other neurological conditions)
  • Compromised Respiratory System (tracheostomy care, ventilator support/weaning)
  • Long-Term Antibiotic Therapy
  • Feeding Disorders (decreasing or increasing BMI, treating Prader-Willi Syndrome [PWS])

Comprehensive & Individualized Care Plans

Because the recovery journey is different for all children, our experienced medical and allied health professionals work as a cohesive team to develop customized treatment plans that evolve as our young patients progress. Complete with board-certified physicians, nurses, neuropsychiatrists, behavioral psychologists, therapists, case managers, and other medical staff, your child’s team is unlike what is offered at any other hospital. Striving to help your child heal and recover, our medical team meets weekly, ensuring the course of treatment is adjusted based upon his or her ever-changing needs.

A hallmark of care at any Nexus facility is our multidisciplinary team. Coordinating services to provide the most effective treatment program for each patient, our team utilizes evidence-based assessment measures. Patients will be seen by a physician daily, with nursing and respiratory therapists available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

We also know it's imperative that parents and guardians are kept in contact with their child's physicians, and it's our promise to be available to address your questions and concerns – and celebrate the milestone moments. Nexus also equips families with the tools and knowledge to confidently continue care at home when your child's functionality is achieved and it's time to go home.
