Treating the entire body, Nexus Health Systems’ medical team develops holistic brain injury rehabilitation plans which include physical, occupational, and speech therapies central to the redevelopment of sensory, motor, behavioral, and cognitive functions. The focus of our rehabilitation goes well beyond just maximizing each patient’s functional independence – to us, simply being able to walk and talk won’t help facilitate a life of productivity.
Gaining an understanding of what a productive life means and looks like to each patient individually, our therapists develop customized plans. Tailored to each individual patient, our neurorehabilitation services involve collaboration between therapy disciplines, including physical, occupational, speech, cognitive, and vocational therapies, with the main goal of returning patients to active participants in their prior roles in the family, community, and workplace.
Our multidisciplinary team helps patients strengthen skills necessary to perform daily activities and lead more meaningful lives. From improved swallowing and speech to strength and balance, our rehabilitationists teach patients strategies to compensate for deficits that are holding back their independence. Nexus’ collaborative model ensures that the areas of progress that are valued most by the patient receive the most attention.
Residents at Nexus Neurorecovery Center (formerly Touchstone Neurorecovery Center) are engaged all day with therapies from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and leisure and recreational activities in the evening. Because we believe consistent stimulation and routines are key to successful recovery, our therapy model is unlike any other facility.
Another difference in our delivery model is that although the vast majority of our sessions are on-to-one, we also utilize small group interventions to target certain skills. In additional to peer-to-peer interaction, other benefits include enhanced engagement, motivation, and participation.
Through our proven brain injury rehabilitation methods, we work with residents on the following skills:
Social & Communication

Our PT services focus on the physical aspects of function relating to each individual patient’s neuromuscular status. Our licensed therapists are extremely experienced and understand the physical and mental challenges a patient may face during the healing process, and we work with patients and families to help each individual achieve his or her optimal physical and functional levels.
Offering a variety of surfaces to practice on – both inside and outside – our treatment focuses on teaching mobility skills through direct one-on-one treatments and group therapy augmenting the dose depending on our residents’ needs. Equipment including body weight-supported treadmills, wheelchair-accessible cardiovascular and resistance machines, Quick Board®, and an overhead harness system assist PT and help our residents improve balance and coordination, as well as wheelchair control and muscle strength.
Family and caregiver education is commonly provided to enhance carryover between what is learned in therapy and what is applied at home after discharge.
Physical Therapy Focuses On:
Nexus Neurorecovery Center’s Occupational Therapy services engaging residents in functional activities to optimize their daily living. A variety of functional tasks are used to target basic activities of daily living and independent living skills. Our licensed therapists aim to provide a patient with the skills needed to achieve independence in all areas of their lives – both cognitive and physical – enhancing a patient’s motor skills while enhancing their self-esteem and sense of accomplishment.
We place emphasis on teaching self-care and mobility skills through direct one-on-one treatments and through small group activities. Depending on what’s important to the resident, what they’re going to do when they leave our Neurorecovery Center, and what kind of support they will have, our team develops a plan to address community reintegration. Skills like dressing, feeding, and bathing are redeveloped in their home on our site. Through activities like trips to the grocery store, meal planning, and money management, as well as engaging technology and functional electrical stimulation and wearable biofeedback devices, we ensure our residents don’t get bored with our program.
Occupational Therapy Focuses On:
Our speech therapy treatment helps patients with speech, language and communication difficulties develop communication skills and tools. Our Speech-Language Pathologist works together with our residents and their families to form a therapy partnership. Our medical team also uses evidence-based modalities to address conditions such as aphasia, apraxia and dysarthria.
Patients participating in our speech services undergo a comprehensive assessment prior to beginning therapy to determine a treatment plan based on their unique needs. Our Speech-Language Pathologist uses formal assessments, behavioral observations, family report, and background information about the patient to determine the severity of the speech and/or language problem that is present. Based upon this information, we design individual treatment programs and carefully evaluate these programs on an ongoing basis in order to make changes as appropriate depending on the patient’s progress.
Our team also determines what external aid or device is appropriate if a resident cannot verbalize. Through simple gestures, cards, communication boards, and voice recognition software, we’re able to help our patients communicate.
Speech Therapy Focus On:
