Everyone Deserves a Vacation.
Every year for over a decade, Nexus Neurorecovery Center residents travel Burton, Texas for the Higher Ground Retreat, a weekend-long event for brain injury survivors. Hosted at the barrier-free, fully adaptive Camp For All, our residents enjoy a various outdoor activities, including horseback riding, ziplining, high ropes course, swimming, and dancing.
“Other environments focus on what they can’t do,” explained Amber Weaver, CTRS, Nexus’ Therapeutic Recreation Services Coordinator, “This camp shows them what they can do. The possibilities are endless there.”
This year, 15 life care residents who call Nexus Neurorecovery Center home attended the retreat. Because the focus is on inclusivity, all of our residents regardless of disability or skill level participated in activities. They had amazing experiences and many commented on how great it was to connect with other brain injury survivors.
Just like you may need a break from work, our residents need a vacation, too. While at Nexus Neurorecovery Center, they’re focused on meeting their rehabilitation goals or even completing jobs around campus. Going to Camp Higher Ground gives them the opportunity to relax, have fun, and show themselves and our staff members what they can do!
